US ambassador urges inclusion of Turkey in Gaza stabilization force

(MENAFN) The US Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, suggested that Türkiye should take part in an international force aimed at stabilizing Gaza, highlighting the country’s military capabilities and its dialogue with Hamas.

"Our suggestion was that since the Turks have the largest and most effective ground troop operation in the region, and since they have a dialogue with Hamas, perhaps that would be beneficial as part of the force to cool the temperature," Barrack said.

Barrack made these remarks at a Washington conference, emphasizing that Türkiye’s involvement would bolster the proposed International Stabilization Force (ISF), which is part of the post-war framework under the ceasefire plan.

The ceasefire in Gaza, implemented on October 10 under a plan by US President Donald Trump, paused a conflict that has lasted over two years, leaving more than 70,000 people dead—mainly women and children—and nearly 171,000 injured since October 2023.

The first phase of the agreement includes exchanging Palestinian prisoners for Israeli hostages and envisions Gaza’s reconstruction alongside the creation of a governing structure independent of Hamas. UN Resolution 2803 sets the transition framework, establishing a Board of Peace, the ISF, and a new administrative committee for the territory.

Türkiye has expressed willingness to participate in the stabilization force. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Ankara is ready to “do whatever it takes” to support the peace process.

Speaking at the Doha Forum, Fidan emphasized that several nations see Türkiye as a key player capable of lending legitimacy to the mission.

Fidan also noted that Türkiye is coordinating with Indonesia, Azerbaijan, and other Muslim and Arab nations on Gaza’s post-war plans. He stressed that while Ankara is open to contributing troops, final participation will depend on the consensus of all involved parties.
